Week 5 – lakamaga

this week I’m moving camps and going to work at camp Lakamaga for a week. It’s kind of scary because it will all be new again and everyone will know how to do things and I’ll be the only new one.

i left straight after breakfast and echo, loca, Perkins, bird, maxi, rocket all came out to say bye and give me hugs which was nice. Then moo drove me to lak which is like an hours drive away. Moo is my supervisor but she’s really lovely and we just chatted the whole way. When I got to lak b-fly met me and showed me my cabin. I slept in Tamaray which is just a cabin with no electricity, no light or water just beds with Cosmo and Joey who I knew from staff training. Everyone was pretty nice and said hi to me when I turned up.

i had 9 girls this week and a CIT (ani, tori, Shelbie, Natalie, Megan, Natalie, Ellie, Chloe and contra)

thinderstorms

RIDICULOUS heat – almost 40 degrees

power went off all the way until lunch on Thursday

paddle boarding!!

moo picked me up on Friday and took me for ice cream at Dairy Queen

week 4

back to camp classic this week!

I had addy, kilee, elenor, maddy, Yasmin, and some others I can’t remember right now

scary thunderstorms and a tornado watch again. 4 tornadoes touched down in MN on Monday night, more sirens. The waterfront drill was cancelled again because the weather was too bad yay

pretty normal week. Shared a room with aurora and shortcake. Heard shortcake complain a l o t about her next week on the adventure outdoors camp where they have to camp in a tent for 3 days. And she’s going with echo who she can’t stand. We became more friends this week though

On Saturday me, rocket, shortcake and echo went to Minneapolis for the day. Rocket drove in her car with no ac. It was icky because it was like 30 degrees out. Went to MOA and did some shopping then went to echo’s stepdads house where there was a family BBQ. Came back to camp and went to bed.

week 2- 4 day camp

For the second week of camp there’s a 4 day plus a 3 day camp instead of one 6 day camp. And this week I’m a HORSE COUNSELLOR which is mildly scary because I don’t know anything about horses! The program is bits and bridles and is a beginners horse program for 8-10 year olds.

Fir the 4 day camp (Sunday – weds) I had 9 kids. Which is loaaads. I had asha, Makenna, Jordan, Brenna, alessandra, Abigail, Ava, Clara and Lucia. There was a lot of kids so they were quite hard to control but we’re pretty well behaved on the whole.

On Monday and Tuesday I spent just under 6 hours each day down at the barn. On Monday half the girls were riding while half stayed in and did barn science. In the morning I mostly sat and watched because there wasn’t much I could do.. Then in the afternoon the specialists all disappeared and I was left on my own to teach barn science to 40 or so kids. So I had no lesson plan or anything and I had to teach all the parts of the saddle and all about different breeds and colours of horses. All the information I had was what I’d listened to in the morning so it was kind of terrifying but I think I did a pretty good job considering. It’s a good job I have a decent memory.

then on Tuesday half the girls were riding in the arena and then in trail while half were in the barn doing the barn jobs. I thought I’d be put in the barn seeing as I’m not much use helping kids to ride but they put me out in the arena and on trail for both morning and afternoon. I had to help girls saddle up and advise them on posture and how to ride etc all day even though I’ve never been on a horse. It was slightly difficult but I just kind of listened to the other instructors and think it went quite well. I was originally only supposed to do he morning but then after that session they put me on afternoon too so I hope that means I did a good Job. I learned a lot about riding horses and I feel like I can now teach someone to ride a horse even though I’ve never done it myself. Hopefully sometime this summer I’ll get a chance to teach myself to ride!

Overall being a horse counsellor was not as bad as I thought it would be! I have to do the 3 day horse camp too this week but then I’m hoping I can go back to being a regular counsellor because I feel a bit like a fraud when I’m pretending to know all about horses to the kids that are paying hundreds of dollars to be here!

It’s 20:45 on Wednesday night now, the 4 day camp left after lunch today and I’m exhausted. I had to do polar bear as an early morning activity this morning but I accidentally forgot to set my alarm so I woke up at 6:40 and had to rush to get ready. I was there early but I didn’t have time to get the kids ready so only 5 kids turned up..oops!

On Tuesdat night we had a big scare though. We were on our break at about 6.45pm which is when the kids have free time to go either swimming or hiking. The sirens started going off which means there’s an emergency and it turned out there was a missing child. Because the child was supposed to be in the lake it was a waterfront emergency which means most of the staff go straight to the lake and start searching it. Weve practised it and it’s very regimented so you can’t just jump in and start searching, you have to search in an order to ensure that every part of the lake gets searched. It was an emergency so everyone was just right in with the clothes they were wearing at the time. I went with loca to run around the back of camp. We ran for about 20 minutes (on the plus side the run showed how much fitter I’ve got since being at camp because a month ago I never would have been able to run that far, although the adrenaline probably helped). Luckily the missing person was found, it turned out she had just walked off without telling anyone but it shook a lot of people up and her counsellor especially was in tears because she thought it was her fault. It was pretty scary but everyone handled it really well. Frazzle, the director, wasn’t on camp at the time so Lola, the assistant director had to handle it all on her own which was the first time she’d done that. In the night when the kids were asleep she came around with chocolate to make sure everyone was ok.

Also this means that that was out second real alarm in 2 weeks with the last one being a hurricane warning so it’s not a great track record.

Anyway, we have the rest of Wednesday night off because the 3 day campers don’t come until tomorrow 9am so me loca and echo are watching the devil wears Prada in the staff room and I, going to bed soon because I’m tired!

First week

first proper week of campers was good. I had 7 kids aged 8-10: aliessa, Lucia, Ella, Olivia, kaitlyn, kassidy and Madison for 6 days.

negatives:

– the first night it took a while to get everyone to sleep but every night they were quiet before 11pm

– most days there is an early morning activity before breakfast which starts at 7am. If you’re in charge of an early morning activity you have to get up at like 6.30 to get the kids at the activity for 7am. Then you’re working still until 11pm with only 2 hours of downtime so it’s TIRING! if you’re not leading an activity then usually someone who is leading can take all the kids down so you can sleep in until about 7.30

– my kids were mostly well behaved but there was lots of squabbles and arguing within the group so a lot of tears and sulks. Moo, my supervisor, said that that was probably an age thing so not to worry about it too much

– I had one real issue with one of the girls who may have stole some money.

positives:

– on the whole my kids were nice and well behaved and were fun to be with

– when the girls first arrive they do a swim check to see whether they can be in the deep end of the lake or not. Only one of my girls didn’t pass the check and she was really upset about it but I helped her practice her swimming every day until finally on Thursday she was able to swim well enough to pass the check and she was really happy about it. So that was a good feeling

– I led the kayak connection, swimming connection and fine arts connections all week with one other support staff and taught archery, tie dying and biking on my own.

– the girls were really excited to find out our real names at the end of the week which was funny

– it was sad to see them go!

16/06

First day of on-site training

had a full tour of camp which took about an hour to walk round everywhere

After lunch we had emergency drills which we have to practice every week. We have to pretend that someone has gone missing in the lake so we have to do foot sweeps and lifeguards have to do full body dives yo search the lake for the person. It’s pretty hard physically

then we got given the names of campers for next week. I have seven girls aged between 8 and 10 and one of them has a birthday during the week

we had to make wood cookies with each campers name on as well as welcoming signs for the dorm

tonight we had a camp fire where we learned some slow songs

then we went to the staff room and watched the rest of she’s the man which we started yesterday

15/06/16

First day off in ages!!!!

was asleep by 11pm last night but managed to sleep in til 10 this morning. It felt so nice to not have to be up for anything. Called mom and dad before lunch.

Stayed at camp for lunch which was chicken and noodles in cheese sauce. They forgot to make a seperate vegetarian dish but put together some noodles, veg and cheese sauce for me at last minute. The kitchen staff are really nice

All of the staff has a day off today which is pretty much the only time that will happen because usually counsellor, specialists and directors all have different days off. So most of the staff (me, joey [rocket] Chloe [shortcake], lorna [pascal], Katherine [perkins], Joan [echo], Jessica[007], phoebe [aroura], Danielle [spud] and Amy [acorn].

Grainnie got a massive bug bite which Lola thought was a deer tick so she had to go the Drs to test for Lyme disease. Luckily she was Lyme disease free, but had to pay $300 for the Drs appointment, which insurance will cover

the rest of us went to Walmart, then to Starbucks, then we picked grainnie up. After we went to the cinema where we all went to watch different films. Me and Perkins watched the jungle book. After we went for dinner at Applebee’s for dinner. I had fish and chips and we told them it was lorn as birthday even though it was 2 days ago so she got free ice cream

then we come back to camp and everyone got their pjs on and blankets, sleeping bags etc to watch she’s the man in the staff room

it was a nice day off but back to on-site training tomorrow

14th June

our cabin had to do flag duty which means we are in charge of the raising of the flag. The American flag is raised every morning and taken down every night. Everyone has to attend and there is a procedure which happens every time. Everyone who isn’t on flag duty has to stand in a semi circle around the flag pole, say the pledge of allegiance (non-Americans don’t have to) and say the Girl Scout law. In the evening everyone has to sing Taps. People on flag duty have to stay silent and wear these red ribbons around their waists and attach the flag to the pole. You have to walk to and from in formation. It’s all really weird. If the flag ever touches the ground it’s supposed to be cut up and burnt. Also this week the flag is only being risen to half mast, which means it only goes half way up the pole, due to orders from Obama because of the Orlando shootings.

So far everyone from 3 different camps have been training at camp Lakamaga but today we all go to our respective camps so we had to be packed before breakfast. In the morning we had more training sessions

then the directors showed us a video made up of photos from staff training week, which they do at the end of every week long camp session. Then we all had to get in to a circle and sing this song about the week ending. The chorus goes:

There is wisdom on this water,
Laughter on this land;
There’s music ‘round the campfire –
Oh, love it while you can;

Its sang slow and makes everyone cry. Some people were in tears already. They sing it at the end of each week when the campers go home, so apparently there’s always a lot of crying.

After lunch it was time to say goodbye to everyone. We had 10 mins so there was a lot of hugging and crying because we had all got to know each other so well after a week or two together. There was about 50 staff altogether at trading and only 15 are going to my camp so a lot of people I might not see again. It was especially sad to say goodbye to Anna, Amy, Kelly, Megan, Sarah

drove in the camp van to elk river with lorna, Mia, Joan and Itzel.

All the elk river staff is staying in the Pines which is more like dorm rooms and they have walls, electricity, lights, showers in the same building so they are like luxury. The only bad thing is that we only get to stay here til Friday, so for 2 days, and then we have to move around again because there is A LOT of people coming for the ‘horsing around with dad’ weekend program so they need our beds.

Im in a room with Rocket, Aroura and Spud.

13th june

Up at 6.20 ready to leave for social security office at 6.50

got there before opening but there was still a queue already. You can’t make appointments there, it’s just first come first serve so it’s always a nightmare apparently

some people couldn’t even get it done in the end because we weren’t told to bring out DS 2019 forms so they forgot them. And you can’t get paid until you get a social security number, so they weren’t very happy

back at 12.15. Arrived mid way through lunch so there was barely any food left. Filled up on Apple crunch stuff that was dessert

had a cold for about a week no and I’m so tired! Can’t wait for a day off

finally got wifi and could talk to mom and dad

had a cookout with Anna, sage, Joan, Sam and skylar. Had quesadillas and cheesecake to start

All camp scavenger hunt game. In a team with Kelly,  Millie, Chloe and joey.

mia and Anna assigned the camp name Wilbur to me, from charlottes web

sat and ate chocolate with Kelly, Aoife, Ruth and Amy before going to bed. Tried to decide on Amy’s camp name

12th june

More training workshops

did biking and canoeing. Canoeing was physically hard but fun

Sunday = pizza night because the campers come on a Sunday so it’s supposed to make them feel more homely

actually had time for a shower before bed
